Martha Ann, our grandmother’s headstone has bothered me for many years
mainly because her last name on the stone is the same as her sister
Mildred East"s married name. I look this up on this family website and find out that it appears that
our granddad, James Wiley Flinn, married grandmother shortly after dad was born (OK, it was
over a year after). I think this is
a mistake, because dad was embarrassed about being so much younger than
our mother, he change his birth date to 1909, but I believe dad was born in 1912 as shown in the early Census, which would have dad born after the
wedding and would have made Hattie very happy. Granddad only lived for a short time after dad was born. It seems like
our grandmother went back to Farmville to live with her parents. There she met her sister, Mildred East in-laws (Aunt Mildred was the only one in that family
generation that I knew, Cecil’s mother, wonderful lady). Aunt Mildred East’s husband’s uncle was Obediah
East, who was our grandmother second marriage. It seems Obediah was the father of our dad
for most of dad's young life and was the one that brought the family to St. Augustine because (I believe) Martha Ann had TB and Florida was the place to go. I think that their relocating to St. Augustine was family magic.
