Collins in North Carolina and Georgia

Welcome

The above photo is of Scarecorn Creek, just west of Hinton, Georgia, in the Talking Rock District of Pickens County. This is probably land once owned by William James Collins, son of Jacob Collins, Sr., and Mary Martin of Lincoln County, North Carolina. If any of this makes sense to you, you are probably in the right place. This website is devoted to relatives and descendants of Jacob and Mary, especially their children who settled in Bartow, Cherokee, Gilmer, Gordon, Pickens and Whitfield Counties in Georgia in the 1840s. The information on this website was gathered from census records, other websites, and historical documents, and is an attempt to create a central resource for all things Collins.

Please note that this is not a typical genealogy site. Long lists of names and dates bore me. What I have tried to do is get a sense of the stories behind the names and dates by relying on family accounts and historical records. As such, there are no family trees here, and all the information is written in paragraph form.

I have also tried to be faithful to the historical records, but the process necessarily includes both induction and speculation on my part, so I make no claim of absolute accuracy. And I have tried to cite all sources, but I know that some have inevitably been left out. However, I envision this page as a living organism, continually growing and revising itself as new information becomes available, and welcome any comments, corrections, and amendments. I try to update this site as new information presents itself.

This is a labor of love and I need no other compensation for it, but I am unemployed, poor and in ill health, so any contributions are welcome.

Thanks,

M. T. Smith, gg-grandchild of Ursula Collins
